Description

Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) are fairly common and widespread in the United States, and often found in small flocks on shores, meadows, wetlands, and in coastal open fields. Their double black breast bands, orange eye ring, and tawny orange rumps are very distinctive. They are medium-sized plovers, measuring about 10.5 inches in length and about 3.3 ounces in weight. They commonly feed on insects.

This Killdeer bathing in a puddle at the edge of a large grassy field at Croton Point Park in Croton, New York, was taken on 8-27-2016. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4 VR2 lens to capture this image.
